Quality spectrums
Skewness and orthogonal quality bands: ANSYS Meshing User's Guide (mesh quality spectrum). Element quality, aspect ratio and Jacobian ratio bands are widely used rules of thumb and MAPDL shape-check defaults — limits vary with element type, physics and solver version, so always confirm in your version's documentation.

How to fix a bad metric PRO
| Problem | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| High skewness | Slivers at thin faces, sharp corners, tiny edges | Virtual topology / defeature small edges, face sizing, switch to patch-independent tets or sweep |
| Low orthogonal quality | Poor inflation layers, stretched cells at junctions | Smooth transition (growth rate 1.1–1.2), fewer inflation layers at corners, improve surface mesh first |
| High aspect ratio | Large element size on thin features | Add face/edge sizing on thin regions, use sweep or shell elements for thin walls |
| High Jacobian ratio | Mid-side nodes forced onto curved geometry | Refine on curved faces, or use dropped mid-side nodes locally |
| Results change with mesh | Not converged, or a stress singularity | Run a mesh convergence study; if stress keeps rising at a sharp corner it is a singularity — add a fillet or read stress away from it |
