Course Overview
Course Description
Build a strong foundation in SOLIDWORKS and learn how to create professional 3D models, assemblies, and engineering drawings through a structured, hands-on approach.
This beginner-focused course starts with the SOLIDWORKS interface and sketching fundamentals, then progressively moves into part modeling, revolved features, holes, draft, shelling, ribs, patterns, model editing, configurations, assemblies, mates, engineering drawings, and assembly documentation.
Throughout the course, you will learn not only how to use individual SOLIDWORKS commands, but also how to approach modeling logically, maintain design intent, manage model changes, and build assemblies and drawings using practical workflows.
The course is designed for learners who are new to SOLIDWORKS and want to develop the skills required to confidently work with real-world mechanical design models.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Navigate and customize the SOLIDWORKS user interface confidently.
Create and fully define 2D sketches using dimensions and geometric relations.
Understand and apply design intent while creating sketches and features.
Create 3D parts using sketches, bosses, cuts, extrusions, and revolved features.
Create symmetrical designs and apply draft angles.
Create standard and counterbore holes using Hole Wizard.
Apply fillets, chamfers, shells, ribs, and thin features.
Create and manage linear, circular, mirror, and sketch-driven patterns.
Edit and repair sketches and failed features.
Make controlled design changes while maintaining model integrity.
Create configurations using design tables, global variables, and equations.
Build bottom-up assemblies using multiple components.
Apply mates and control component relationships and movement.
Analyze assemblies for interference and clearance problems.
Create professional engineering drawings from 3D models.
Create section, projected, broken, and detail views.
Add dimensions, centerlines, center marks, notes, surface finish symbols, and geometric tolerances.
Create exploded views and assembly documentation.
Use BOMs, balloons, explode lines, collision detection, and interference checking.
Course Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, learners will be able to:
1. Create Parametric 3D Models
Create accurate, editable SOLIDWORKS parts using sketches, features, and parametric modeling techniques.
2. Apply Design Intent
Build models that behave predictably when dimensions, features, or design requirements change.
3. Develop Practical Sketching Skills
Create robust sketches using dimensions, geometric relations, symmetry, and proper sketching techniques.
4. Model Complex Mechanical Features
Use advanced modeling tools such as Revolve, Draft, Hole Wizard, Shell, Rib, Fillet, Chamfer, and Pattern features.
5. Troubleshoot & Modify Models
Identify common sketch and feature problems, repair failed features, and make controlled design changes.
6. Manage Design Variations
Create multiple design variations using configurations, design tables, equations, and global variables.
7. Build Mechanical Assemblies
Create bottom-up assemblies, insert components, apply mates, control component movement, and manage assembly relationships.
8. Validate Assemblies
Check assemblies for interference, clearance, collision, and basic performance-related issues.
9. Create Engineering Drawings
Generate manufacturing-oriented drawings from 3D models with appropriate views, dimensions, annotations, and tolerancing information.
10. Document Assemblies
Create exploded views, assembly drawings, BOMs, balloons, and other documentation required to communicate an assembly clearly.

Who Is This Course For?
This course is suitable for:
Students learning mechanical CAD
Mechanical engineering students
Diploma and engineering graduates
Beginners starting with SOLIDWORKS
Designers transitioning from 2D CAD to 3D CAD
Engineers who want to strengthen their SOLIDWORKS fundamentals
Professionals who need a structured refresher on SOLIDWORKS
Prerequisites
No prior SOLIDWORKS experience is required.
Basic knowledge of engineering drawing and mechanical design concepts is helpful but not mandatory.
What You Will Build
Rather than learning commands in isolation, you will work through a progressive set of mechanical modeling and assembly exercises covering:
Sketches → Parts → Advanced Features → Patterns → Editing → Configurations → Assemblies → Mates → Analysis → Drawings → Assembly Documentation
By the end of the course, you will have a practical understanding of the complete SOLIDWORKS design workflow—from creating the first sketch to producing an assembly and its engineering documentation.
